Everyone in the UK team is passionate about skiing & boarding. Some of us have worked seasons in the Alps whilst others are just good at the numbers!
We have all been to Chamonix several times and our list of resorts we know personally include, but are not limited to: Chamonix, Morzine & Les Gets, Megeve, La Clusaz, Courmayeur, Val D'Isere, Tignes, The 3 Valleys, Davos, Klosters, Engelberg, Andermatt, Cortina ...
Our aim is to deliver a memorable and personalised service that is second to none. From the time of your first enquiry, through to departure and meeting up with our representatives, we want you to get the most out of your short break.
Because of this we do not offer online booking or advertise package costs. We are here to piece your requirements together, and not offer you what we want you to buy! We work the other way around to most companies, which is refreshing but unusual in the industry.
We look forward to hearing from you

Andrew Fox and Stefaney Fishwick head up the Chalet team in Chamonix.

Andy and Stef have been working in the catering industry for many years in a wide variety of settings, including bars, restaurants and hotels.
Andy has had particular experience working at the Waterside Inn under Alain Roux. As a result of our hard work and being passionate about what we do we have worked our way up the career ladder into Head Chef (Andy) and Restaurant Manager (Stef) positions.
We have many hobbies including going to the gym, socialising with friends and spending time with each other. This has included travelling around Europe with one another which we did in 2010 and we would want to continue to carry on travelling to different parts of the world, hopefully through our work as well as pleasure.
During the years of working in the industry we have both had experience of working abroad, in Portugal and France, which was a very positive, professional and personal learning experience.
We are always up for new challenges within our career as this is always an exciting experience and gives us both the chance to learn new things.
We are both looking forward to this new challenge and feel that it will be an exciting and positive experience working at Chalet Les Jumelles in Chamonix, and especially look forward to meeting and providing quality service for our clients.
All our ski guides and instructors live locally and are selected as much for their personality and communication skills as for their professional expertise.
Their familiarity with particular ski areas and their understanding of prevailing snow conditions ensures that you get the most from your time with them.

Although mountain sports are my passion, I also very much enjoy meeting people from all over the place and transmitting them my love of the mountains and my dedication to always improving technically. 'Just a wee note to say thanks to you and your colleagues for our brilliant break in Chamonix. We'd first heard of Ski Weekend in a Les Houches lift queue (slow cable car on a snowed in day) and wondered if it was as good as it sounded. A very uplifting experience indeed. With best wishes from a snow deficient Scotland.'

I have been meaning to do this since we got back, but life in general has got in the way.
I wanted to let you know what a FABULOUS weekend we had with you two weekends ago in Chamonix.
We were lucky enough to have action hero Daf looking after us and I can’t sing his praises loudly enough.
He was (and remains I suspect) a charming, helpful, kind (to my kids especially), interesting host and generally showed us a very good time in the most understated manner.
I loved our weekend and all that remains is to say….it’s my 40th next February and my best present would be to repeat the experience we had this year…maybe with a few friends thrown in.
Gabrielle 4th April 2011
I have to say I have not ever taken the trouble before to follow up with a travel company on the back of a holiday but I just wanted to let you know we had a great weekend in Chamonix Mar 24-28th.
We were extremely happy with the service offered by Ski Weekend both in Exeter and in resort in Chamonix. The transfers, accommodation and in particular the guiding from Nino & Sarah were all excellent.
I know Nino & Sarah were moving on and, we thanked them both in person before we left, but if you are able to relay this message to them or the Resort Manager I would be grateful.
Neil 4th April 2011
We had a really wonderful weekend and were thoroughly impressed with Ski Weekend's organization.
Daf and Simon our ‘hosts’ were brilliant. So thank you.
Robyn 17 March 2011
Great trip thanks. Simon and the Ski Weekend team were excellent.
Peter 16 March 2011.
Simon was vey professional and good fun.
Overall I was impressed.
Unexpectedly, I had to travel alone, but everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Angela 10 March 2011
Thank you both for helping organise a great week-end for the team and me.
We all had a brilliant time. As always the restaurants at lunchtime and evening were just what we were looking for and the food and wine were much enjoyed.
In fact a few of us may have over-enjoyed the food and wine given we were a few men down on the last day!
James 09 Mar 2011
Dear All,
I just wanted to say on behalf of myself and the team and guests, thanks so much once again for an excellently organized FUN weekend. As always we had a great time, the investors and partners were very happy and well looked after, the guides were great, and all had an excellent weekend.
The Saturday night activities were especially awesome, being dragged round a course at breakneck speed tied to each other was an experience I won’t forget in hurry, and the girls were well impressed with our rooms.
Thanks again.
Best regards

I don't normally fill out these questionnaires, but the service you offer is outstanding - I find myself recommending Ski Weekend all the time.
We've been before and would have no hesitation in booking again.
Steve 07 March 2011
I just wanted to say how much we all enjoyed the Ski Weekend experience, it really was well organised and made a real difference to our trip.
Think it’s safe to say that the guys we took will be booking future trips with you. All went down very well.
Luke 24 Feb 2011
Just returned, great weekend and excellent hotel.
Thanks for your help.
Ian 14 Feb 2011
Just to say many thanks for organizing a seamless weekend. In fact this was our best Chamonix trip and much of this was down to you and Rory and your logistics and hosting. We didn’t ever have to wait for a minute and everything from when we arrived at the hotel to departing from Geneva was fantastic.
Many thanks
James 07 Feb 2011
We all had a wonderful four days skiing thanks.
We couldn't have asked for more and no one wants to go home.
Richard, Sian, Rachel and Michael. 01 02 2011
A trip to Chamonix was long overdue and I am really glad I got there.
The management of the trip was excellent and we all had a fabulous time.
Please pass on my thanks to you and your team for making it all go so smoothly.
Colin 31 Jan 2011
Will almost certainly come again, perhaps even bring the wife (she would love Chambre Neuf)!
We all enjoyed the trip and found all of your team to be most helpful.
A special note of thanks should go to Rory who put up with us in his daily guiding and made a big contribution to the weekend
regards
Alan 31 Jan 2011
I just wanted to say thanks for a great weekend.
Where there are 10 blokes to arrange it's impossible to get everything right (!!) but I think you guys made a good effort.
Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for you to arrange.
The hotel was great and I think we all enjoyed all the lunches and dinners.
The transfers ran very smoothly and picking up the skis on Thursday night was a winner.
Overall it was a great weekend.
Simon 26 Jan 2011
Ski Weekend were very impressive.
Yves was an excellent course leader.
Brian TNTT course 26 Jan 2011
Just a quick note to tell you how much we enjoyed our weekend in Chamonix.
Despite the tricky snow conditions, Rory found us some fanastic skiing for all three days and we had an amazing time.
The chalet was great fun and Andy's food is absolutely fantastic.
The whole Ski Weekend team looked after us so well.
We've got tired legs and some great memories of a brilliant 3 days ski and apres ski - which is all you can ask for really!
Thanks for sorting it all out for us - we'd love to be back next year (or sooner...).
Hattie 24 Jan 2011
A short note to thank you and all the Ski Weekend staff (in the UK and Chamonix - David, Simon, Rory etc) for a very memorable 4 days ski-ing.
The service from the initial enquiry through to being dropped off at Geneva at the end of the course was first class.
I would also like to thank all involved for the flexibility and help given to Sarah for the two days of the TNTT Course.
Her first ski of 2010/11 was down the Vally Blanche!!
The guides - Lionel and Yves were fantastic, knowing when to encourage.
Their knowledge of the area given the varied conditions off piste was fantastic! Lionel managed to find some untracked snow.
I would not hesitate to recommend Ski -weekend and will more than likely be booking another trip if not this season then next.
Thank you once again.
Keith and Sarah 24 Jan 2011
I suppose it's an expensive way to do it, but good value for money.
Cosmo 13 01 2011
Better than expexted!
Simon 13 Jan 2011
Thank you for a great week in Chamonix.
Symon and I had an excellent time and got some great skiing in despite the less than ideal conditions.
Nino in particular was an excellent host – a cut above everyone else in our opinion (I was also very impressed about the care he took when out skiing with my friend Gavin’s 11 year old).
I wish you and everyone at Ski Weekend a happy new year and an excellent season and look forward to skiing with you again soon.
Regards,
Ian. 10 Jan 2011
Another great weekend, despite the travel difficulties. Thanks to everyone for outstanding flexibility, as well as the usual excellent service of the chalet staff, Andy’s superb cooking and the skilful and friendly guiding – especially the amazing day with Gavin in Courmayeur yesterday.
In the confusion of fast-changing travel arrangements last night, I think left my wash bag in the chalet bathroom. I would be grateful if anyone returning to London might be prepared to bring it back at sometime.

Different levels of orientation are available for intermediate and advanced skiers. For more advanced skiers who wish to venture onto the glaciers and enjoy some exciting off piste skiing, we can organise an UIAGM mountain guide for a day or half a day to give you the skiing experience of a lifetime.
NB Skiers who are unsure about their ability to join the orientation programme should ask themselves the following questions….
If you can answer yes to all these questions then you will be of a sufficient standard to join in the orientation programme.

Truly Tailor-Made Ski Holidays
From the very first days of Ski Weekend we have set out to provide tailor-made short breaks to each and every client’s specific requirements.
Because we offer a unique holiday to every request, we are unable to display prices. To put it simply, we can’t give you a price until you let us know what you would like to do. There are just too many variables in a truly tailor–made package.
We can give an indication of prices from ..... but would prefer to give you a no obligation, real time, available to book quote tailored to your request.
This is in marked contrast to some of the online suppliers who take you through a lengthy process of determining your requirements, only to end up at a page that tells you they will then check availability and get back to you.
We are always happy to respond to requests by email or phone to start the ball rolling. There is an online enquiry form on the contact us page.
But you can save yourself, and us a lot of time by talking to us directly on the phone; besides we like talking to you.
To contact us please call UK 01392 878353 or email sales@skiweekend.com.
Our team look forward to talking to you.
For how it works page
We have always emphasized the great value and fantastic snow at the beginning and end of the winter season. There are ski holiday bargains to be had and more often than not masses of snow.
Last winter really proved our point, with astonishing quantities of snow for our Val d’Isere warm up ski weekend and great skiing in Chamonix, well into May.
We start the winter off with our Warm Up Ski Weekend in Val d’ Isere; normally the first weekend of December. The following weekends, up until Christmas we run our 3 Countries in One Weekend ski trip. Then in the late spring we offer our April Activities, spring skiing, ski touring and of course skiing, making maximum advantage of the warmer and longer days.
Key points for early and late season skiing:
Late Season Skiing
We concentrate our late ski season programme in Chamonix. The ski resort traditionally closes after the first weekend in May and with this season's snow record, there will be no problem in skiing on the Grand Montets until then.
With most of its skiing above 2000m and north-facing, the season inevitability ends leaving vast areas of perfect snow in and around Chamonix.
Some of the best skiing of the season can be found on the slopes of the Grands Montets with very few people and in glorious spring sunshine. The longer spring days mean there is no urgency to get up at day break.
Early spring offers the best combination of winter on the ski slopes and spring in the valley. It is very easy to ski in the morning and spend the afternoon playing tennis, mountain biking, or fit in a round of golf on Chamonix’s 18 hole course.
Prices are at their lowest in late season and with increased availability on flights and accommodation it gives you the greatest choice. Not only that but the the ski resorts are at their quietest and most relaxing.
Give us a call to discuss a ski weekend or short break in April
This year our warm up ski weekend will be led by Gavin Foster and the Ski Weekend resort team and will feature our top mountain guides and ski instructors:
We will also be providing ski orientation all day with the Ski Weekend resort team and afternoon skiing with Gilbert and Guillaume is available, at an extra cost. Last year's ski weekend warm up was one of the best yet.

From the first weekend of December until Christmas we will ski in any of a range ski resorts within 2 hrs of Geneva.
It is often the case that there will be great snow in one area and very little only just down the road.
Although we have never offered a snow guarantee in one resort we have always made it our policy to take you to the best available snow in the area.
We have no interest in bashing up and down the same stretch of man-made snow all day when 40 minutes down the road there is perfect snow!
Having our resort staff and vehicles in position in the Alps ready for an early start means we are able to respond quickly to changes in the ski conditions on a daily basis. We have had fantastic ski weekends when we have skied one day in Chamonix, one in Verbier, and another in Morzine following the powder.
Pasta in Italy, Fondue in Switzerland and the full French gastronomique experience, that's a great ski weekend and surely beats Christmas shopping!
What our clients say about us

Charlie, corporate group of 44 Staying in Chamonix 9-11th 2011

Getting it right and making it work
On a short ski break time is at a premium and the critical factor in your ski weekend will be your travel arrangements. Get them right and you’ll enjoy yourself. Get them wrong and your ski weekend’s spoiled.
How you travel is your choice. We can offer scheduled flights with traditional and low cost airlines. We can also book ferry crossings or the Channel Tunnel.
Whichever you choose, we aim to get you to the ski resort feeling calm and stress free and ready to start your ski break on a high.
Whatever your option, call us and we will be happy to provide costings.
When choosing your resort there are a number of criteria to consider:
The choice is yours
Our flights, your flights, air miles, no frills or, club class, how you fly is up to you.
We are more than happy to organise flights for you and have access to all of the key European Alpine gateways.
If we book your flights, you will have financial protection of your holiday package under our ATOL licence.
Geneva, Zurich and Milan are our main inbound airports, but anything is possible, although to really maximise your ski time it is best to limit the transfer time between airport and ski resort to around two hours.
Regional departures make the whole travel experience more pleasant and our experts are happy to advise on the most suitable route to the snow.
Transfers can make or ruin a short break. Short and quick is the key to success.
We have a variety of options open to us to suit your budget; from hire cars to helicopters.
In the vast majority of cases we meet each individual flight IE just yours, however we do reserve the right to combine flights, but we would not expect anyone to wait more than one hour at the airport before heading off to the resort.
You can, by all means, request a private transfer at an additional cost.
We are one of the few UK based ski companies to have our own fully licensed transfer company. Weekend Travel Transfers SARL, based in Chamonix and travelling between Geneva and Chamonix most days. We are able to organise transfers on request and are extremely competitive on price.
Please feel free to ask us for a quote tel. +44(0)1392 878 353 or email info@skiweekend.com.
For transfers from Geneva airport to Chamonix (approx. 70 minutes), we would normally provide the transfer in one of our own vehicles. This is assuming your flight’s arrival and departure times are out of normal skiing time.
Our resort staff can’t ski and drive at the same time!
For larger groups, other resorts, or out of hours transfers we have an established team of transfer providers at our disposal ranging from taxi services to luxury 50 seater coaches according to your requirements.
For a truly special experience nothing beats the drama and excitement of a helicopter straight from the airport to the resort.
Ski Resort Location
The Choice is Yours
You will want to make the most of your ski weekend break, so there are a number of criteria to consider:
For the maximum time on the snow, you need to keep the transfer time to a minimum. It’s worth choosing a ski resort where you are confident of good access even in heavy snowfalls, a good snow record and a mixture of skiing to suit the levels in your group are vital.
Other factors are après and non-skiing facilities and whether the resort is purpose built or traditional.

Where to Stay

Your choice of accommodation is central to the success of your weekend. We take special care in choosing a hotel or chalet to match your specific requirements.
All the accommodation we use has been personally vetted by us to ensure it meets our own high standards of comfort and cleanliness.
Most of our accommodation is family-owned and run.
The owners and managers are accustomed to catering for the special needs of Ski Weekend clients.
We have every confidence that they and their staff will provide a warm welcome and a personal service.

When you speak to our staff in the UK you can be confident that they are speaking from personal experience about your accommodation.
They will have spent much of the off-season scouring the Alps, investigating hotels and resorts suitable for ski weekends.
Our team will have had personal experience of the ski resort and will be able to put your mind at rest about all the small details that are vital to making your skiing holiday a success.

We offer a wide range of accommodation to suit individual budgets and requirements.
The minimum we offer is a 2 star hotel; with all rooms having en-suite bath or shower facilities (except in some chalet accommodation).
At the other end of the scale, for a really special ski weekend we can arrange a luxury suite in a 5 star hotel.

The home of Alpinisim.
Chamonix is one of our main winter ski resorts as its proximity to Geneva airport, along with the range of skiing that it offers for different abilities makes it ideal for a skiing short break.
With the spectacular Mont Blanc massif dominating the scene, the elegant old town has a stylish, bustling atmosphere and a blend of charm, genuinely varied skiing and modern facilities which few other Alpine resorts can match.

Chamonix’s centre is full of atmosphere, with cobbled streets and squares, beautiful old buildings and a fast-running river. The Alpine Museum should not be missed.
The town squares and pavement cafés make wonderful vantage points for spectacular views of the mountains and glaciers. They are busy all day and into the early evening with sightseers and après-skiers.
The atmosphere is very French, very friendly and very Alpine. As well as the extensive choice of shops and cafés, bars and restaurants, the excellent sports facilities include a heated swimming pool, indoor and outdoor ice rinks, squash and tennis courts, a gym and a sauna.
For those energetic individuals seeking après-ski activities, there are plenty of nightclubs, bars and a casino.

Skiing in the Chamonix Valley is divided into six areas offering opportunities for skiing and snow boarding to suit all tastes and levels of skill.
The skiing on Les Grands Montets is ideal for both advanced and adventurous intermediate skiers. Renowned for providing some of the most challenging off piste skiing anywhere in the Alps, it also offers some of Europe’s most breathtaking glacial scenery.
Le Tour, at the head of the valley, is perfect for beginners and intermediates keen to rediscover their ski legs. Its features include wide blue and red ski runs and a recently opened lift which offers access to some superb tree skiing.
Flégère and Brévent have sunny, south-facing slopes with stunning views of Mont Blanc. The two areas are linked by gondola and offer inviting cruising terrain for skiers of intermediate standard. Hungry lunchers are also well catered for. The view across the Chamonix Valley from a restaurant sun-deck is reason enough to spend a day skiing here.
Les Houches is the bad weather alternative, with good snow conditions ensured by a generous battery of snow cannons. The area offers very good Austrian-style skiing below the tree line and a variety of runs for all standards. It also provides floodlit skiing for anyone who’s undefeated by daylight activities.
At an altitude of 3,842 metres, the Aiguille du Midi gives access to the highest skiing in Europe at 3842 metres.
This is the beginning of the famous Valle Blanche; a 23 kilometre run on the glacier down to the valley floor at 1000 metres. Skiing here is not to be missed; it's the closest thing you'll get to Everest base camp.

Owned by Ski Weekend since 2001, Chalet les Jumelles was built thirteen years ago in the traditional Alpine style, with wooden shutters and generous balconies.
Situated in the quiet area of Les Pècles, a short walk from the centre of Chamonix, it boasts truly stunning views of Mont Blanc, the Aiguille du Midi and the Bossons Glacier.
Accommodation is for up to twelve/thirteen people in six twin/double or triple rooms, all with en suite bathrooms and a sauna & spa shower area where guests can ease their aching limbs.
This season we are delighted that Andy Fox returns as our own Michelin trained chef. He had some oustanding testimonials from last season and our guests will enjoy full cooked breakfasts, afternoon baked cakes and a multi-course dinner with accompanying wines.

The chalet's interior offers a tasteful, spacious yet, cosy atmosphere. A huge open plan sitting and dining area is the main feature of the first floor.
This luxurious setting - with its deep sofas, open fire and fantastic views is an ideal place to relax after a hard day on the slopes. Chalet les Jumelles provides a unique ski or snowboard destination for a small group (12+), a family or two.
Chalet les Jumelles has a fully flexible booking calendar and you can opt to stay for a short break, a long weekend, mid-week or full weeks as required.

Our team looks forward to talking to you.

You must be insured when you ski with us.
It is a condition of booking a holiday with Ski Weekend that you are insured for emergency medical and rescue expenses for off piste skiing.
We do not provide insurance and you are responsible for arranging your own policy.
There are a number of specialist winter sports insurers such as Snowcard, The British Mountaineering Council , Ski Club of Great Britain etc.
Whilst we do not recommend any one insurer over another, we would stress that you should ensure you are covered for skiing off piste and that helicopter rescue charges are included if necessary as many budget, low cost or free insurances may not cover our ski tours adequately.

From our very beginnings we have offered ski hosting together with an in-resort representation service.
They are still a part of core values and something that stands us out from our competitors. We know that they are the key reason for so many of our clients coming back to us year after year.
Recently we have started to become oversubscribed, particularly the ski hosting element of our packages. In order to maintain the high standards we have set ourselves, we will now restrict the number of places available for the full service, ski orientation package on a first come first served basis.
Now known as Premium plus.
Conversely we have found that at the opposite end of the scale we have a growing number of clients who would like to take advantage of our experience compiling their short break on their behalf but would prefer to remain independent in resort. Now known as Independence.
For those clients who would like to take advantage of the key elements of resort service, but not take part in the ski orientation programme we now have our Premium service.
Give us a bell to discuss which option may suit you best!

For skiers of intermediate level and above; it is designed for those who want to meet up and have fun, ski in a group and be shown areas they have never explored before. It’s a great way to learn more about the mountains and the Chamonix Valley.
Our aim is to find the best snow to suit the group’s ability and ensure you have a memorable day’s skiing. There will be a daily rendezvous lunch meeting point making it possible to meet up with friends, partners or colleagues who have been elsewhere.

The famous Vallée Blanche in Chamonix is an off-piste ski route accessed from near the top of the Aiguille du Midi cable car at 3812m. At its best, the 20km decent of some 2700m will take you all the way back into Chamonix itself via the Géant glacier and Mer de Glace.
The views are epic, and whilst the terrain is not pisted, it is a very popular 'strong intermediate level' route.
Things to note:
- It is a requirement that all skiiers are accompanied by a qualified mountain guide (up to 6 per guide). It is a route with crevasses and seracs and therefore imperative to ski as guided.
- Several routes down are possible dependent on conditions on the day
- The start of the route involves negotiating an arête which is probably the most difficult and dangerous part.
- There are mid-way rest stops including a restaurant
- Unless there is exceptional snow cover to the valley floor, it is normal to ski to the Montenvers train station and ride the train back to Chamonix itself
- The route is conditions dependent and whilst the snow is not normally a problem, other factors can close off the route unexpectedly
What can Ski Weekend do?

Ski Weekend try to keep all our news and weather up to date so you can be sure the snow conditions are right and you can keep an eye on what’s going on in Chamonix and the French and Swiss Alps.

After last weeks snow fall, the mountains are still in good condition. The pisteurs are doing a grand job in maintaining the pistes, which is making t-shirt skiing tan-tastic!!
Grand Montets is still offering some of the best skiing, but the downside is that everyone in the country knows it. The pistes are hard packed in the morning and then turn a little slushy by midday.
If you want to get the very best skiing ensure you grab the first lift and get the fresh corduroy tracks from the Top of Grand Montets all the way back down to Lognan.
The season’s not over yet.
A nice new 30cm dump of fresh snow landed in Chamonix Sunday night/Monday morning, this has left the pistes refreshed and super fun. Off piste options have opened up too, and some of the team skied a cheeky Pas de Chevre on Tuesday from the top of the Grand Montets, good fun, great snow conditions, but remember to pack a rope for the exit...!
Fantastic skiing through the trees back on Grand Montets, big powder grins on all faces. Longer spring days mean there is now plenty of time to re-live the day’s adventures with friends and a beer in the deck chairs in the Marmottons bar at the bottom of the lift. The new snowfall on soft pistes has left them super grippy and great carving conditions; Les Houches’ Kandahar world cup downhill course is a great blast mid morning to test the legs.
Brevant and Flegere remain the best spots for sun and fantastic views of Mont Blanc Massif and the spectacular Dru. These views are best enjoyed with a beer from the comfort of a piste-side hot tub at the Cafe Chavanne on Flegere...! Chamonix town (and pistes) have really quietened down now with those pesky half term kids back in school, it’s nice to have a bit of calm back in town.
After dark, Chamonix’s ever-improving Rue de Moulins is delivering great nights out, with a varied selection of funky restaurants and lively bars, some of which are new this season.
More unsettled weather on its way – so don’t pack away them big skis just yet...
The skiing conditions: Good!
Skiing necessities; Sun cream and Shades!
Spring skiing has arrived in Chamonix!
The skiing conditions: Good!
Skiing necessities; Sun cream and Shades!
The weather in Chamonix has been very hot and sunny. Fortunately due to an impressive two months of snow during December and January it has given the pistes a good enough base for it to be maintained over the sunny period.
Grand Montets is the best mountain to ski right now due to it being North facing, which means it doesn’t get the sun until mid-day. The off-piste is hard in the morning but great in the afternoon once the sun has softened it up.
We skied the Valley Banche twice yesterday, at 1pm and 4pm. The 4pm ski was the best ski of the day. To see the pink skis over the grand mountains it was something quite special.
Chamonix held the Telemark world cup at Le Planard over the weekend, with 100 competitors from 14 nations The competition had an impressive turn out and the atmosphere was electric.
On a positive note there is snow on the way!!! It’s due to fall Sunday, Monday and Tuesday just in time before we packed our powder skis away!
So after a snow dance by the Ski Weekend team, our wishes came true and the snow fell.
Just enough of fresh powder to satisfy our powder craving, making us enthusiastic enough to get up early and catch the first lift!
Yesterday we decided to stay off the piste and take the opportunity to ski the Pas de Chevre. It was my first time sking the Pas de Chevre and what an incredible ski it was.
We made sweet fresh tracks down the glacier, a little bit of rock climbing which was interesting and then an exciting decent onto the glacier to then finish with some tree skiing on the way home. The weather was glorious blue sky and sunshine, warm enough to ski in a t-shirt.
So after the awesome ski yesterday, we thought we had to take the opportunity to Ski the Valley Blanche especially in these superb conditions.
We got the 12pm bin up to the top, put the crampons on and made our way down the arête. The arête was in fine condition, roped both sides making it very safe and enjoyable for all skiers to make their way down.
We skied the The Petit Envers du Plan and then joined onto the Grand Envers du Plan. Great ski conditions, lovely areas of fresh powder, came across a few moguls but over all it was a fantastic ski so good we did it a second time, just couldn’t resist it.
February 4, 2012
Le Tour is a fantastic resort for all levels of skiers. The main ski area consists of lots of blues and red runs, which make’s it a perfect place for beginners. But for the more adventurous skier Le Tour has some incredible terrain, which will entertain you all day.
You can head over to Vallorcine, which offers enormous ski area’s of technical tree runs, basins, bowls and untouched powder.
Whilst skiing at Le Tour today a low cloud was hovering around the valley, threatening low visibility and freezing temperatures. The freezing temperatures dropped down to a very chilly -13°C, but this made the snow conditions delightful.
This evening’s temperatures are expected to sore well below zero reaching as low as -26°C.
The famous Men’s ski race The Kandaha started today in Chamonix. Its become the most popular and cultural event in the valley marking 54 years of alpine racing in the region. Apparently the event attracts over 50,000 people to Les Houches to watch the event and participate in the festivities.

Chamonix received a 32-inch snow storm on Friday night, which closed the resort and postponed the big mountain contest until Monday. Due to the bad weather and poor visibility, the athletes had little opportunity to study the mountain face before the competition with many of the athletes relying on photographs to choose their lines. A total of 55 men and 18 women competed across snowboarding and skiing. So the competition was given the go ahead by the organizers on Monday morning, as there was fresh snow and clear skies.
The Men’s Freerider event was won by New Zealander Sam Smoothy, who had a incredible fluid run and cleared the majority of the cliff lines. . "Winning here in the home of Freeriding, it doesn't get better, it's amazing" said a stoked Smoothy afterwards.
British hopeful James Stentiford finished in seventh place ahead of the current world champion Xavier de la Rue.
The women’s Freerider event was won by Jackie Passo USA, who was surprised but very pleased with her result saying "I was not expecting to win at all although I did ride my chosen line."

Snow Conditions
Chamonix’s snow conditions are the best I’ve ever seen, the slopes a perfectly groomed and there are no queue for the lifts. We’ve had two weeks of blue sky and sunshine and now we have three days of snowfall. This morning we woke up to 3ft of fresh powder! Hats off to whoever’s in charge of mountain safety this year, the teams are working fast to secure the mountain from avalanche risk. A mountain guide told me that they have used more gunpowder in the last month than they did whole of last year!
The piste-skiing conditions are the best I've ever skied here in Chamonix.
Because there has been so much snow that the groomers have been able to do a fantastic job of the piste preparation, and the cold temperatures are keeping the snow hard and compact. New year has past and the pistes are empty and because of the reduction of skier traffic it makes the ride even more sensational.
The ski weekend team went to do the Valley Blanche yesterday and had an incredible day skiing on the glacier, the conditions where perfect and the crevasses where filled making it even easier to ski and enjoy.
Good forecast for January, great powder days followed by blue sky and sunshine..
After a three week dumpathon of snow it has finally come to an end!
The lifts have all finally opened only to reveal idillic powder fields!!
The most perfect start to the season, the weather has now gone back to default Chamonix winter mode - clear, blue sky, sunny and cold! and it looks like it's going to stay that way for the next couple of days, according to weather predictions.
We skiied the Envers Du Plan Vallee Blanche yesterday! Just 6 tracks in front of us, no gear on the arrete, ice axe crampons etc. The Crevasses where well filled in and it enable us to ski all the way down to Chamonix town.
1. Most famous – other places swing in and out of fashion but Chamonix remains the premier destination for skiing and mountain sports. This world beating reputation is built upon a long history of distinction – for example, the first winter Olympics were held here in 1924 and these days one of the key legs of the World Cup is hosted at the Khandahar Verte des Houches ski run.
On piste or off, the quality of skiing is unrivalled, and where else could you ski in three different countries in one day? Don’t forget either, the Haute Route - the most famous and coveted ski touring route in the world – which starts in Chamonix.
2. Most spectacular - the alpine peaks which surround Chamonix are without question the most impressive in the whole of Europe. Mont Blanc at 4810.45 metres is the highest peak in the Alps, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car, which rises in a spectacular sweep from the centre of Chamonix to the summit of the Aiguille, is the highest passenger cable car in the world.
3. Most excellent – this is the centre of excellence for all who want to improve their skiing standard. There are numerous high quality ski schools, and the most respected and experienced ski guides around. Chamonix has the full range of skiing challenges from learner slopes to adventurous off piste, also, because of its elevation it has a good snowfall average – which means reliable conditions throughout the season.
4. Most awe-inspiring - the Vallee Blanche is the longest, most breathtaking off piste ski run in the world, and one which is accessed by the sensational Aiguille du Midi cable car. For many visitors this is the highlight of a visit to Chamonix – catch it in February or March when the conditions are at their best and you will have a memorable day to treasure for the rest of your life!
5. Most diverse – Chamonix is actually a cluster of ski areas, all with their own unique character and attractions. Les Houches is home to the famous Khandahar ski run, plus 47 kms of piste suitable for a range of skill levels. Le Tour offers a gentle introduction and is popular with families. Brevent and Flegere have a good mix of standards with plenty of moderate and difficult runs. The Grand Montets, situated above Argentiere is the largest of the Chamonix ski areas; it is popular with experienced skiers and has a wealth of challenging and difficult runs.
Yet it is perhaps off-piste where Chamonix really has the strongest claim for greatness. All of the main ski areas have wonderful back country ski terrain. Whatever you’re after - be it, spring snow or powder, open slopes or couloirs – you will find it in abundance here.
6. Best Apres-ski – all visitors to Chamonix have their own definition of what Apres-ski is. For some it is relaxing on a sunny café terrace, or tucking into delicious regional specialities, such as Fondue, Raclette and Tartiflette at a traditional eatery. For others it is savouring exquisite gourmet food in a high class Michelin starred establishment such as the Restaurant Gastronomique Albert 1er.
Some seek out live music venues, and later on, raucous nightclubs where they will dance the night away to the sounds of top international DJs. Others go in search of micro breweries and cozy pubs - real ale fans should keep an eye out for La Rousse du Mont Blanc, which has just won Best Amber Pale Ale in the World Beer Awards.
Whatever your definition is, you won’t be short of entertainment once the day’s skiing is done. Chamonix excels at Apres-ski like no other place does.
7. Most fabulous shops – Chamonix is not a seasonal resort, it’s a proper mountain town, and no ordinary one at that. Here you will find many unexpected distractions beyond the traditional Apre-ski activities.
If you fancy a little retail therapy you are spoilt for choice, with a range of high quality fashion shops brimming over with Chamonix chic and prestige brands such as Chanel, Benetton and Moncler.
There are also exclusive boutiques for all the big outdoor brands, such as Patagonia, Quicksilver and Peak Performance. And then there are the wonderful savoyarde delicatessens specialising in Alpine cuisine.
And if all that shopping proves too much bother, why not head to one of the many Chamonix spas and unwind in style.
After all that if you want to see Chamonix being the fastest (never mind quite possibly the badest) then watch this...

El Capitan log entry 22: 20/09/2011
Took 4 and half hours to go down.
All had to lug major weight all the way down.
But got down right before went pitch black.
Lionel and Gilbert off to get rv hope still in parking about a k away and I await the bears attacking me in the dark as I have the leftover food waiting by the side of road
El Capitan log entry 22a: 20/09/2011
All down, no bears, done and showered.
Can now shop for souvenirs tomorrow and then back to San. Fran. for investor meetings and then home sweet home....
Dear All.
I am pleased to report that we have successfully summited the Nose route of El Capitan.
It took 3.5 days on the cliff face, was very demanding physically with getting up from our portaledge on the face at 5 am, climbing from 6 am to 9 pm and hauling 120 kilos up to the summit. We were very pleased to reach the top, especially as so many other teams didn't make it, either from exhaustion, injury - or just fear - while we were there. The climb is best described as truly awe inspiring.
I have included some pictures (attached) and am happy to share more, as well as the log, for those who don't mind the vertical!
As relayed earlier, I am pleased to report that the disabled British veterans summited on Friday, Mount Snowdon with 17 men and 2 dogs.
With your fantastic help we exceeded our original goal of £20,000 and now hope to exceed £30,000 for our true heroes.
Thank you for your support!

Last pitch from last camp, South African team (Gasha and Julliete; sponsored great climbers) dropped fixed rope down to help us fast to camp 6, where we stay night.
Gilbert may fix a rope for next pitch to get a quick start but will see.
El Capitan log entry 20c: 19/09/2011
Had another group on small rock ledge
So we set up three portaledges with us in the air. off to sleep with 4 pitches to go tomorrow
El Capitan log entry 20d: 19/09/2011
Looking forward to finishing.
Interesting night - bed slightly slanted felt like roll out whole time, but Gilbert and Lionel pure suspension.
Looks like we have a fixed rope for first pitch.
El Capitan log entry 21: 19/09/2011
Did the 4 long pitches as 3, very tough all tired.
Used cams and nuts way up.
Seeing summit was pretty amazing.
First scene u have is the tree at the top, pretty amazing experience.
Truly and totally awesome 3 1/2 days to climb. More concluding thoughts later
And as we look out in distance storm rolling in, 4 hour walk down with all gear and bags
El Capitan log entry 21a: 19/09/2011
Done, can take a proper poo now.....
have 4 hours to walk down before storm rolls in
Pictures here
El Capitan log entry 17: 18/09/2011
Very long afternoon and difficult time re logistics for king swing.
Hauling 2 heavy bags plus all of us was very tough and all super tired.
Didn't make goal of camp IV. One pitch short so setting up all ledges on decent belay but airborne.
Still working on bringing bags in and getting late.
El Capitan log entry 17a: 18/09/2011
Not sure will summit Sunday may now be Monday am
El Capitan log entry 17b 18/09/2011
Set up bed on cliff edge with tiny ledge to lever off.
If I roll right I'm a gonner (tied in, nothing to worry about).
Team tired and good we get some sleep soon
El Capitan log entry 18: 18/09/2011
Decent night of sleep of about 6 hours, weird dreams of Lauren and I walking on outside decks, also dealing with moonlight at peak I think 02:30, feels like sun.
Off to start new day once we repack gear from cliff
El Capitan log entry 19: 18/09/2011
Started day made up to camp 4 (small ledge that can hold bags) and now waiting for team ahead who are very good free climbers.
11 hard pitches to go, so say about 2/3rds done so far.
Not clear we can do in a day
Gilbert and Lionel relayed that bed spun in the night and was stuck in harness but was ok (of course)
El Capitan log entry 19b: 18/09/2011
Made mistake, 14 more pitches to go of which at least half super tough, trying to make camp 6 next ledge tonight
So Monday night summit current expectation
El Capitan log entry 19c: 18/09/2011
Standing on belay below the great roof, truly awe inspiring and a bit above my grade.
Probably will swing out from corner and ascend from new swing position
Capitan log entry 20: 18/09/2011
Great roof super hard for Gilbert so I chose the 2400 feet in air jugging the rope.
Lionel had some diff coming across but we all made to belay about a meter from the edge of the roof and pure massive cliff face with 1 inch ledge - hauling 2 massive bags, time for the three of us and bags 2.5 hours .
Once over some real interesting tiny cracks but not overhanging but difficult and Lionel peeled a few nuts off on small fall.
Trying to make camp 6 by night fall and that will leave us with Monday noon finish. But who knows
El Capitan log entry 20a: 18/09/2011
7 pitches to go out of 31 pitches, but these are the "tough ones".
Made it to camp 5 at 16:15 now trying to get to camp 6 by dark (19:30).
Pure rock climbing.
Picture here
El Capitan log entry 12: 17/09/2011
Ended up going around them via harder crack, did stoveleg, racks and super impressive would have wanted to free climb whole if not so high up.
Kept cranking past two girls teams, one was pretty good, till we made dolt tower, ledge where we can set up the portalledges
I'm totally exhausted and no lots more coming next two days.
El Capitan log entry 13: 17/09/2011
Nice dinner of pasta, and off to sleep.
South African girl team made it as well.
Annoying American girl team didn't and bivvyed on wall below.
Started climbing at 3 am and woke us up. So bit wacked.
Figured out how to change clothes clean up and pee.
El Capitan log entry 14: 17/09/2011
Up at 05:40 to start around 06:45, packed gear.
Felt poor, mainly tired and cold - forgot to wear jacket at night. Popped a special Gilbert pill and feels better.
Climbing generally is not difficult if it was say 15m and say 30m off deck.
However at lengths of 50m and 500m off deck, very scary and I vote aid gear.
Even my Cham. guides using gear to hold the cracks every so often and as protection
El Capitan log entry 15: 17/09/2011
One pitch up from dolt, two adventure bits, one of guides drops a rock shoe while hauling bag by going down cliff and then has to take major fast dump while we are together on ledge.
Wasn't so bad until some poo remnants on his pants I had to clean
Slowly making our way up to king swing
El Capitan log entry 16: 17/09/2011
El Cap tower - pure flatbed but smells of all people here before.
Climbing major face while guys in chimney.
Forgot to mention almost hit flying poo bag last pitch.
2 teams bailed who were in our pack as too tired. Now only one team ahead

Big dinner last night, American style pasta, cheese, ice cream... up early today to start setup for climb. G
ilbert and Lionel off to do early ropes to sickle ledge.
KB hauling two massive bags (60k) plus portaledges plus poo tube to base to haul up. P
lan to tie up gear today and start early am in dark - this way we clear 200m in 30 minutes and get a head of a few groups.
Getting some emails off, while waiting.
Hopefully new phone arrives at awanee lodge tonight...
El Capitan log entry 9: 16/09/11
Spent most of yesterday dealing with setting routes.
Tried to climb but huge line that dragged wait to 2 hours.
Some super yosem locals who plan on doing Friday climb offered fixed ropes.
Gilbert and Lionel used ropes and then we started hauling all bags.
Whole experience took 4-5 hours as we had three ropes tied and knots were challenge plus huge weight of bags meant hauling in masssive pendalum abour 20m down from belay. 2 large haul bags, 2 portoledges and poo pipe
Down for rest and up early for 5 am start
El Capitan log entry 10: 16/09/11
Up early walked in dark and did 200m 4 pitch climb up ropes to sickle ledge.
On way saw two guys jumping off with wing suits early to beat the rangers.
At ledge ran into German team, and super slow group in front of us, so no idea how we pass.
Guys slept on ledge relayed that they had a few mice as well.
Pants ripped and had extra pair as expecting given my quality sewing job, had to take bottom harness off and change while on ledge.
Now know how to poo
El Capitan log entry 11: 16/09/11
Gilbert and Lionel freaking out re slow team not moving.
Seen this picture before over the years.
A few more minutes and we will go to do impossible pass
German team going down.

El Capitan Log entry 8: 15/09/2011
Spent afternoon under El Cap, checking out route.
Definitely scary but real hairy bit looks from great roof up.
The king swing looks far bigger than I imagined and have no idea how we will do this especially as guys have idea of Tyrolean abseil.
Met a few other teams in prep, one was on wall during storm yesterday and had to come down. Looked mentally fried.
Went and got gear including the $30 specially constructed poop tube!

Spent day mostly in preparation. Also camera guy at ansel adams museum suggested putting all electronics in rice for a day or so and may work re extracting water from phone, camera, flip etc.
Needed to get more supplies so bought 14 1 gallon bottles of water, 9 1 litre cokes, more instant noodles than you can think of, tons of dried fruit and sugar bits, 6 different blocks, etc. All need to go into haul bag. Still need to get poo tube and may get another camelback. Yes I left my kili bags at home. Place super bizarre, especially as infrastructure and roads in great shape. We have Japanese tour groups, senior citizens, overweight people, families and climbers all in one. The climbers are easy to spot, all with lists in their hand looking for supplies. And when you checkout, super heavy smelly lady tells us weather in Tahoe area bad for three days and oh by the way, granite attracts electricity....
Info so far 4 teams at least leaving camp 4 for climb tomorrow. one team who we met in store is French team who are bring the Belgian Sumo champion up, climbed 8 times before only. We plan tomorrow rope setting and early am leave the next day. Latest forecast good weather past tomorrow but high winds at least day 1 on cliff.

One thing forgot last leg, ropes caught on last pitch and we had to get out of there so we left and going back this am. While Gilbert and Lionel do the 1 hour approach back and climb up to get ropes, I am off to do emails as phone down and only have laptop. Plan seems to be find some cameras to buy, do some warmup. Shop what is left and pack haul bags for nose. Goal to bring bags to nose today up to sickle ledge (4 pitches) and start climb tomorrow.

Woke up early this am, to do investment committee as in classic Patron way, guys were late getting draft to me to review and accordingly all rushed. Despite best efforts call, we had to drive to another location for phone to work and took time and we started late the proper climb.
Went to Upper Cathedral (nice finger climb) to do officially 5c-6a+ to do 11 pitches and spend day. Did 8 pitches, found a few super hard as really chimney and wet rocks. At top of 8th pitch saw thunderstorm in distance moving so and lightening so had to call it. Started abseiling and 2 pitches from end, wind came and sounded super scary plus lightning bolts. Then on last abseil, rain was insane and everything totally soaked. Worse we still had to go back down, which too an hour before up to the climb. But rain cranked in and started worrying about flash floods.
Our path down washed out, so went alternate way and made it down. Discovered the housekeeping lodge - giant laundry machine and dried everything including the bed sheets and stuff as we left the vents open! and rv rained in.
Weather looks challenging next two days so maybe short climbs and Friday till Tuesday weather says all sunny, we hope!

A massive rockfall has occured on the Aiguille du Dru. On the 10th and 11th of September, 12000m3 of granite was exfoliated from the west face of the Petit Dru.
The huge grey scar on the west face marks the previous major rockfall from 2005.

El Capitan log entry 3
After good night sleep, up to check out yosemite village, a bit surprised how commercial it all is, the shops at the village were massive and ignoring price, all stuff we bought at wallmart was here. Off to climb warm up - in am 7 different one pitch climbs on swan slab, increasing up to say 6a french then break to see el cap from meadows
El cap pretty massive and all of us were impressed but for me, more scary was how smooth whole climb looked, never done anything that looked like that even smaller. Also not obvious how massive until us see boot flake where do king swing and super small from meadows.
Then after viewing break off to do some chimney practice at church cliff area, 1st route trickey but not hard, 2nd route much more challenging, bit tough on a few moves especially with moss
All done by 7 pm and headed back to site and to find wifi for emails and memo reviews for call in am.

Took some time to get to the rv place and after 20m video instruction on how to connect poo lines, on our way to the wallmart to stock up.
Perhaps one thing forgot to do was food list as no real idea what's available in park. Did best we could for say 4 days and off to 4 hour drive to Yosemite, pulling in at around 11:45 pm and still in dark you can see the monster. What makes it immediately impressive is that there is no build up to the mountain, it just pops up. With moon light can still see, can't wait till am to see.
New challenge is that site we rented was non electric and no power! So snaked again... Let's see what happens in am

El Capitan log
Started morning day with some trepidation, all worked up by family who are worried. Then a few hours with Gilbert and Lionel who came to my house the night before and all is calm. Especially as weather is getting better and went through plan day 1 300m climb at royal arches as warm up, day 2 set first 4 pitches fixed ropes at base with day 3 early am leave and goal to do in 2 nights! Not 4-5 I thought.....
Boarding uneventful despite 9/11 flight to US
More to come....
